"Where words fail, music speaks."

Did you know that I’ve personally curated a playlist on Spotify for The Annika Brisby Soundtrack? The app is free with ads, or you can stream all your favorite songs ad-free for $10/month. There's a wide range of types of artists on here, so if you're in a music slump, check it out!

A matter of time…

I remember the day that this song came to me. I'd already written the first book in the Annika Brisby series and was working on The Silver Thread, which focuses on Annika's frustration and stubbornness when life gets in the way of her artistic endeavors. I was soaking in an antique claw-foot tub and trying to imagine what Annika's music would sound like once things fell into place for her. I kid you not, I started hearing music as if someone was playing it in the next room! And then another song came along...and then another one. I hummed the melodies over and over so I wouldn't forget them. I remember getting out of the tub and finding the nearest scrap of paper as I picked out the lyrics the same way that an archaeologist picks out artifacts from the ground. I scribbled them down with every hope that one day these songs could be transferred out of my head and be made into something real. Something that other people could hear.

The trouble was that I've never written music before, so I didn't know what to do. I kept perfecting lyrics and singing to myself in the shower, in the car, into my phone so that I wouldn't forget the songs. Fast forward a few years to when I met my husband Scott, who not only has a degree in guitar performance and collects a wide range of instruments, but he also had a home recording studio setup. It took us a while to get to a point where we were ready to record our first original song together, but when we were finally ready, everything happened really fast. I gave him the melody and the words, and he took them and did his magic. When he played back the demo for me I was so overwhelmed that I cried. It was exactly what I'd been hearing in my head for all these years, and now it's done! I still have more songs that I plan to work on, but I wanted to share "A Matter of Time" because it's going to be in the audiobook version of The Silver Thread.

Enjoy!
